Our creative endeavors brought us together in 2013, when we first met as students at Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts Clay program. Pretty early on, we realized that we all shared a similar happy… rooted in making. Not only pots, but also the less tangible, more vital stuff--like making space for imagination and imperfection and community. We believed that there was good stuff in leaning on each other--in living a life together instead of going it alone.
This made us want to keep working together, so we started churning on the idea of building a very simple work space together as a place to grow as potters. In the summer of 2014, we broke ground on the bricks and mortar of Mudhoneyz Studio. With the help of some of the hardest working, most generous friends around, we built our studio from the ground up.
A year later, we launched a Kickstarter Campaign to raise funds to build our kiln. Nearly 200 people chipped in, surpassing all expectations and paving the way for our kiln build in the winter of 2015.
Today, Mudhoneyz Studio is the home of our collective business, where we work together to balance each other’s strengths and weaknesses and share the workload of marketing, bookkeeping, overhead, wood prep, firing and the ever growing list of small businesses demands.
But the studio remains something bigger than the home for our business. It’s hallowed ground, sown from the encouragement and support of a tremendous group of people who nurtured our dream. It’s a place where people come to be together, to work and laugh, to eat good food and share in the experience of helping others see what is possible year after year.
Our creative work is a tribute to this. Our hope is that our pots pay homage to their roots, finding their way into your hands and accompanying you to new possibilities.
